    Distances and Places

Charlotte represents the center of our loosely planned itinerary. The middle of a trip is when you can fully fledge yourself into “living in the moment” without the anxiety of the beginning and the nostalgia of the end. Charlotte was always a place that has “a lot of Muslims” but I never imaged that the city would one day become part of a narrative that I would write to share with the world. (More …)

    gayi umr dar band-e-fikr-e-ghazal

It helps to have a traveling companion. As a child, I vividly remember our family vacations, all six of us and our luggage crammed into a white Ford Windstar, driving for hundreds of miles at a time. I would often stay up with my father into the dead of the night as the rest of my family was passed out in their seats, heads drooped to the side and saliva dripping from the corners of their mouths. I would poke my tiny curly head in between the driver’s and passenger’s seats and listen curiously as he taught me about how the world worked. Sometimes it was politics, like how the freemasons may or may not control the global political economy. These sessions were also when I learned most of my Islamic history and mythology. I learned about Harun al-Rashid, Juha (Nasrudddin Hodja), Haza’ Tamburi (Tamburi’s shoes), and the lives of the prophets. It would become clear that it was time to pull over and take a break when the stories stopped making sense, like when Prophet Joseph decided to take exit 34 because he wanted a happy meal.

    Winding Up In Winston Salem

After quite a hectic week, I didn’t exactly know I felt about starting the NNC expedition. I always look forward to fall break as a means to escape the stress of exams and my Duke life. Yet, I knew that NNC was an opportunity that should not be missed. Ideally, the trip was to be an intense experience that would compel us to understand the deeper bonds of community and humanity in the context of Islam in North Carolina. But I welcome the change as an opportunity for myself to grow. One of our greatest fears was that we wouldn’t be able to relate to the people we meet…that they would simply smile at us and give us sugar coated answers or tell us what they think we want to hear….that we would come back with shattered hopes.
